Recent Trends in Australian Region Tropical Cyclone Activity
نویسنده
چکیده
The number of tropical cyclones observed in the Australian region (south of equator; 105-160~ has apparently declined since the start of reliable (satellite) observations in the 1969/70 season. However, the number of more intense cyclones (with minimum pressures dropping to 970 hPa or lower) has increased slightly. The numbers of weak (minimum pressures not dropping below 990 hPa) and moderate systems (minimum pressures between 970 and 990 hPa) have declined. Possible reasons for these different trends are discussed. The decline in the number of weaker cyclones may at least partly reflect improved understanding of the nature of some weak systems. The decline in the number of cyclones more intense than 990 hPa primarily reflects the downward trend in the Southern Oscillation Index (SOI). Previous work has demonstrated that the number of tropical cyclones observed in the Australian region each cyclone season is related to the value of the SOI prior to the start of the cyclone season. This relationship is clearest with the number of moderate cyclones. The SOI is only weakly related to the number of intense or weak cyclones. The increase in the number of intense cyclones is not attributable to the trend in the SOL Nor is there clear reason, at present, to suspect that it is artificial (i.e., due to changes in observing or analysis techniques).

SIXTH INTERNATIONAL WORKSHOP on TROPICAL CYCLONES Topic 4.2 : Possible Relationships Between Climate Change and Tropical Cyclone Activity Rapporteur:
This report reviews the current science on possible relationships between climate change and tropical cyclone (TC) activity/intensity on different time scales. Since variability of tropical cyclone activity/intensity on intraseasonal, interannual, interdecadal and multi-decadal scales is a topic addressed separately in another section of this report (Subtopic 4.1), the emphasis of this chapter ...
متن کامل3d.2 Temporal Clustering of Tropical Cyclone Occurrence on Intraseasonal Time Scales
Over the global tropics, the Madden-Julian Oscillation (Madden and Julian 1994, MJO) explains a significant amount of the variability in circulation and convection on intraseasonal time scales. However, significant variation exists in the spatial extent and seasonal occurrence of the MJO. While the upper-level divergent flow associated with MJO is often traced around the globe, the low-level wi...
متن کاملHuman influence on tropical cyclone intensity.
Recent assessments agree that tropical cyclone intensity should increase as the climate warms. Less agreement exists on the detection of recent historical trends in tropical cyclone intensity. We interpret future and recent historical trends by using the theory of potential intensity, which predicts the maximum intensity achievable by a tropical cyclone in a given local environment. Although gr...

Atlantic basin increased markedly in the years 1995– 2000, compared with levels in the 1970s and 1980s. For example, the accumulated cyclone energy (ACE) index in the At lantic has been above the 1951–2000 median for all years from 1995 to 2005 except for the El Niño years of 1997 and 2002 (e.g., Bell et al. 2006). The increase in activity since the early 1980s has been confirmed using homogeni...
متن کاملTrends in Global Tropical Cyclone Activity over the Past Twenty Years (1986-2005)
5) Two metrics were evaluated to determine trends over the past twenty years. The first metric is the Accumulated Cyclone Energy (ACE) index, which is the maximum sustained wind speed squared at six-hour intervals. ACE represents an approximation of the kinetic energy generated by a tropical cyclone. ACE correlates globally at 0.97 with Emanuel’s PDI index which is the wind speed cubed at six-h...
